Leon Lewis Sr. founded Lewis General Tires in 1919 when he established a General Tire franchise at 260 East Avenue. To survive the Great Depression, Leon took on two partners, one of them being his competitor across the street. Post World War II, Leon bought out his partners, intending to pass his company to one or more of his sons: Leon Jr., Alan, and Richard Sr.
A Bold Move
In 1969, Richard Sr. became the sole owner. He made a bold business decision to move the company headquarters from East Avenue to a large facility on W. Henrietta Road. He felt that the future of the tire business was in the suburbs. Additionally, the Henrietta location positioned the company closer to the thruway and other major highways.
At the time, Henrietta was primarily farmland, eventually becoming the commercial center it is today. Lewis General Tires was one of the first businesses to establish themselves in this area. The East Avenue location closed in the 1980s.
